The "Texas Thunderbolt" or "Old Sparky" as it was called, was first used in 1924 and handled 361 executions until retired in 1964. Before 1924, criminals were executed by hanging. Old Sparky was built by an inmate who once faced the death penalty in 1914 for a murder. His sentence was changed to a prison term and eventually released.
